Abstract: | : | More than a billion people access the Internet through residential
broadband connections worldwide, and this number is projected to grow
further. Surprisingly, little is known about these networks: What
performance do users obtain from their ISP? What factors affect
performance of broadband networks? Are users bottlenecked by their ISP
or by their home network? How are applications such as the Web
affected by these networks? Answering these questions is difficult;
due to the tremendous diversity of technologies and applications in
home and broadband networks, and the lack of a good vantage point to
obtain good measurements from. The home gateway presents a unique vantage point to characterize home and access networks and mitigate performance bottlenecks that are specific to such networks. It is always on and can directly observe the home network, the access network, and user traffic. In this talk, I will present a holistic characterization of three important components of the last mile using the gateway as the vantage point: the access link that connects the user to the wider Internet, the home network to which devices connect, and the performance of the Web, one of the most commonly used applications in today’s Internet. BIO: Dr. Srikanth is a postdoctoral fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), Berkeley. His research interests are in the design and performance of Networked Systems. His current work focuses on a broad range of issues in broadband and mobile networks, including network performance, privacy and security of the mobile app market, and designing a more intelligent protocol stack with a focus on improving application performance. His work has won the IRTF Applied Networking Research Prize, and the IMC Community Contribution Award, and has been published as a Research Highlight by the Communications of the ACM. He received his Ph.D. from Georgia Tech., USA in 2014; his M.S. from University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA and B.E. from Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur, India. |
